[YA]: Before thee We sent (messengers) to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity, that they might learn humility.
[RK]:We have sent (messengers) to communities before you, and we put them to the test through adversity and hardship, that they may implore.
[YA]: When the suffering reached them from us, why then did they not learn humility? On the contrary their hearts became hardened, and Satan made their (sinful) acts seem alluring to them.
[RK]:If only they implored when our test afflicted them! Instead, their hearts were hardened, and the devil adorned their works in their eyes.
[YA]: Say: "Who is it that delivereth you from the dark recesses of land and sea, when ye call upon Him in humility and silent terror: 'If He only delivers us from these (dangers), (we vow) we shall truly show our gratitude'?"
[RK]:Say, "Who can save you from the darkness of the land or the sea?" You implore Him loudly and secretly: "If He saves us this time, we will be eternally appreciative."
[YA]: Call on your Lord with humility and in private: for Allah loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds.
[RK]:You shall worship your Lord publicly and privately; He does not love the transgressors.
[YA]: Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We took up its people in suffering and adversity, in order that they might learn humility.
[RK]:Whenever we sent a prophet to any community, we afflicted its people with adversity and hardship, that they may implore.
[YA]: And do thou (O reader!) Bring thy Lord to remembrance in thy (very) soul, with humility and in reverence, without loudness in words, in the mornings and evenings; and be not thou of those who are unheedful.
[RK]:You shall remember your Lord within yourself, publicly, privately, and quietly, day and night; do not be unaware.
[YA]: We inflicted Punishment on them, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor do they submissively entreat (Him)!-
[RK]:Even when we afflicted them with retribution, they never turned to their Lord imploring.
[YA]: No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari'
[RK]:They will have no food except the useless variety.
