Thumma qasat quloobukum min baAAdi thalikafahiya kaalhijarati aw ashaddu qaswatanwa-inna mina alhijarati lama yatafajjaruminhu al-anharu wa-inna minha lamayashshaqqaqu fayakhruju minhu almao wa-inna minhalama yahbitu min khashyati Allahi wamaAllahu bighafilin AAamma taAAmaloona

ثم قست قلوبكم من بعد ذلك فهي كالحجارة او اشد قسوة وان من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الانهار وان منهالما يشقق فيخرج منه الماء وان منها لما يهبط من خشية الله وما الله بغافل عما تعملون

[YA]: Thenceforth were your hearts hardened: They became like a rock and even worse in hardness. For among rocks there are some from which rivers gush forth; others there are which when split asunder send forth water; and others which sink for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.

[RK]:Despite this, your hearts hardened like rocks, or even harder. For there are rocks from which rivers gush out. Others crack and release gentle streams, and other rocks cringe out of reverence for GOD. GOD is never unaware of anything you do.

Fa-in amanoo bimithli ma amantumbihi faqadi ihtadaw wa-in tawallaw fa-innama hum fee shiqaqinfasayakfeekahumu Allahu wahuwa alssameeAAualAAaleemu

فان امنوا بمثل ماامنتم به فقد اهتدوا وان تولوا فانما هم في شقاق فسيكفيكهم الله وهو السميع العليم

[YA]: So if they believe as ye believe, they are indeed on the right path; but if they turn back, it is they who are in schism; but Allah will suffice thee as against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

[RK]:If they believe as you do, then they are guided. But if they turn away, then they are in opposition. GOD will spare you their opposition; He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

Thalika bi-anna Allahanazzala alkitaba bialhaqqi wa-inna allatheenaikhtalafoo fee alkitabi lafee shiqaqin baAAeedin

ذلك بان الله نزل الكتاب بالحق وان الذين اختلفوا في الكتاب لفي شقاق بعيد

[YA]: (Their doom is) because Allah sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism Far (from the purpose).

[RK]:This is because GOD has revealed this scripture, bearing the truth, and those who dispute the scripture are the most ardent opponents.

Wa-in khiftum shiqaqa baynihimafaibAAathoo hakaman min ahlihi wahakaman minahliha in yureeda islahan yuwaffiqiAllahu baynahuma inna Allaha kanaAAaleeman khabeeran

وان خفتم شقاق بينهما فابعثوا حكما من اهله وحكما من اهلها ان يريدا اصلاحا يوفق الله بينهما ان الله كان عليما خبيرا

[YA]: If ye fear a breach between them twain, appoint (two) arbiters, one from his family, and the other from hers; if they wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation: For Allah hath full knowledge, and is acquainted with all things.

[RK]:If a couple fears separation, you shall appoint an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family; if they decide to reconcile, GOD will help them get together. GOD is Omniscient, Cognizant.

Waman yushaqiqi alrrasoolamin baAAdi ma tabayyana lahu alhuda wayattabiAAghayra sabeeli almu/mineena nuwallihi ma tawallawanuslihi jahannama wasaat maseeran

ومن يشاقق الرسول من بعد ماتبين له الهدي ويتبع غير سبيل المؤمنين نوله ماتولي ونصله جهنم وساءت مصيرا

[YA]: If anyone contends with the Messenger even after guidance has been plainly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that becoming to men of Faith, We shall leave him in the path he has chosen, and land him in Hell,- what an evil refuge!

[RK]:As for him who opposes the messenger, after the guidance has been pointed out to him, and follows other than the believers' way, we will direct him in the direction he has chosen, and commit him to Hell; what a miserable destiny!

Thalika bi-annahum shaqqoo Allahawarasoolahu waman yushaqiqi Allaha warasoolahufa-inna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

ذلك بانهم شاقوا الله ورسوله ومن يشاقق الله ورسوله فان الله شديد العقاب

[YA]: This because they contended against Allah and His Messenger: If any contend against Allah and His Messenger, Allah is strict in punishment.

[RK]:This is what they have justly incurred by fighting GOD and His messenger. For those who fight against GOD and His messenger, GOD's retribution is severe.

ذلك بانهم شاقوا الله ورسوله ومن يشاقق الله ورسوله فان الله شديد العقاب

Law kana AAaradan qareebanwasafaran qasidan laittabaAAooka walakinbaAAudat AAalayhimu alshshuqqatu wasayahlifoona biAllahilawi istataAAna lakharajna maAAakumyuhlikoona anfusahum waAllahu yaAAlamu innahum lakathiboona

لو كان عرضا قريبا وسفرا قاصدا لاتبعوك ولكن بعدت عليهم الشقة وسيحلفون بالله لو استطعنا لخرجنا معكم يهلكون انفسهم والله يعلم انهم لكاذبون

[YA]: If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them. They would indeed swear by Allah, "If we only could, we should certainly have come out with you": They would destroy their own souls; for Allah doth know that they are certainly lying.

[RK]:If there were a quick material gain, and a short journey, they would have followed you. But the striving is just too much for them. They will swear by GOD: "If we could, we would have mobilized with you." They thus hurt themselves, and GOD knows that they are liars.

Waya qawmi la yajrimannakumshiqaqee an yuseebakum mithlu ma asabaqawma noohin aw qawma hoodin aw qawma salihinwama qawmu lootin minkum bibaAAeedin

وياقوم لايجرمنكم شقاقي ان يصيبكم مثل مااصاب قوم نوح او قوم هود او قوم صالح وماقوم لوط منكم ببعيد

[YA]: "And O my people! let not my dissent (from you) cause you to sin, lest ye suffer a fate similar to that of the people of Noah or of Hud or of Salih, nor are the people of Lut far off from you!

[RK]:"And, O my people, do not be provoked by your opposition to me into incurring the same disasters as the people of Noah, or the people of Hood, or the people of Saaleh; and the people of Lot are not too far from you.

Yawma ya/ti la takallamu nafsun illabi-ithnihi faminhum shaqiyyun wasaAAeedin

يوم يات لاتكلم نفس الا باذنه فمنهم شقي وسعيد

[YA]: The day it arrives, no soul shall speak except by His leave: of those (gathered) some will be wretched and some will be blessed.

[RK]:The day it comes to pass, no soul will utter a single word, except in accordance with His will. Some will be miserable, and some will be happy.

Faamma allatheena shaqoofafee alnnari lahum feeha zafeerun washaheequn

فاما الذين شقوا ففي النار لهم فيها زفير وشهيق

[YA]: Those who are wretched shall be in the Fire: There will be for them therein (nothing but) the heaving of sighs and sobs:

[RK]:As for the miserable ones, they will be in Hell, wherein they sigh and wail.

Lahum AAathabun fee alhayatialddunya walaAAathabu al-akhiratiashaqqu wama lahum mina Allahi min waqin

لهم عذاب في الحياة الدنيا ولعذاب الاخرة اشق ومالهم من الله من واق

[YA]: For them is a penalty in the life of this world, but harder, truly, is the penalty of the Hereafter: and defender have they none against Allah.

[RK]:They have incurred retribution in this life, and the retribution in the Hereafter is far worse. Nothing can protect them against GOD.

Watahmilu athqalakum ilabaladin lam takoonoo baligheehi illa bishiqqial-anfusi inna rabbakum laraoofun raheemun

وتحمل اثقالكم الي بلد لم تكونوا بالغيه الا بشق الانفس ان ربكم لرؤوف رحيم

[YA]: And they carry your heavy loads to lands that ye could not (otherwise) reach except with souls distressed: for your Lord is indeed Most Kind, Most Merciful,

[RK]:And they carry your loads to lands that you could not reach without a great hardship. Surely, your Lord is Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Thumma yawma alqiyamati yukhzeehimwayaqoolu ayna shuraka-iya allatheena kuntum tushaqqoonafeehim qala allatheena ootoo alAAilma inna alkhizyaalyawma waalssoo-a AAala alkafireena

ثم يوم القيامة يخزيهم ويقول اين شركائي الذين كنتم تشاقون فيهم قال الذين اوتوا العلم ان الخزي اليوم والسوء علي الكافرين

[YA]: Then, on the Day of Judgment, He will cover them with shame, and say: "Where are My 'partners' concerning whom ye used to dispute (with the godly)?" Those endued with knowledge will say: "This Day, indeed, are the Unbelievers covered with shame and misery,-

[RK]:Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will disgrace them and ask, "Where are My partners that you had set up beside Me, and had opposed Me for their sake?" Those blessed with knowledge will say, "Today, the shame and misery have befallen the disbelievers."

Qala rabbi innee wahana alAAathmuminnee waishtaAAala alrra/su shayban walam akunbiduAAa-ika rabbi shaqiyyan

قال رب اني وهن العظم مني واشتعل الراس شيبا ولم اكن بدعائك رب شقيا

[YA]: Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones, and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to Thee!

[RK]:He said, "My Lord, the bones have turned brittle in my body, and my hair is aflame with gray. As I implore You, my Lord, I never despair.

Wabarran biwalidatee walam yajAAalneejabbaran shaqiyyan

وبرا بوالدتي ولم يجعلني جبارا شقيا

[YA]: "(He) hath made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;

[RK]:"I am to honor my mother; He did not make me a disobedient rebel.

WaaAAtazilukum wama tadAAoona mindooni Allahi waadAAoo rabbee AAasa allaakoona biduAAa-i rabbee shaqiyyan

واعتزلكم وماتدعون من دون الله وادعوا ربي عسي الا اكون بدعاء ربي شقيا

[YA]: "And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: perhaps, by my prayer to my Lord, I shall be not unblest."

[RK]:"I will abandon you and the gods you worship beside GOD. I will worship only my Lord. By imploring my Lord alone, I cannot go wrong."

Takadu alssamawatuyatafattarna minhu watanshaqqu al-ardu watakhirrualjibalu haddan

تكاد السماوات يتفطرن منه وتنشق الارض وتخر الجبال هدا

[YA]: At it the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split asunder, and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin,

[RK]:The heavens are about to shatter, the earth is about to tear asunder, and the mountains are about to crumble.

Ma anzalna AAalayka alqur-analitashqa

ماانزلنا عليك القران لتشقي

[YA]: We have not sent down the Qur'an to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress,

[RK]:We did not reveal the Quran to you, to cause you any hardship.

Faqulna ya adamu innahatha AAaduwwun laka walizawjika falayukhrijannakuma mina aljannati fatashqa

فقلنا ياادم ان هذا عدو لك ولزوجك فلايخرجنكما من الجنة فتشقي

[YA]: Then We said: "O Adam! verily, this is an enemy to thee and thy wife: so let him not get you both out of the Garden, so that thou art landed in misery.

[RK]:We then said, "O Adam, this is an enemy of you and your wife. Do not let him evict you from Paradise, lest you become miserable.

Qala ihbita minhajameeAAan baAAdukum libaAAdin AAaduwwun fa-immaya/tiyannakum minnee hudan famani ittabaAAa hudaya falayadillu wala yashqa

قال اهبطا منها جميعا بعضكم لبعض عدو فاما ياتينكم مني هدي فمن اتبع هداي فلايضل ولايشقي

[YA]: He said: "Get ye down, both of you,- all together, from the Garden, with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor fall into misery.

[RK]:He said, "Go down therefrom, all of you. You are enemies of one another. When guidance comes to you from Me, anyone who follows My guidance will not go astray, nor suffer any misery.

LiyajAAala ma yulqee alshshaytanufitnatan lillatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalqasiyatiquloobuhum wa-inna alththalimeenalafee shiqaqin baAAeedin

ليجعل مايلقي الشيطان فتنة للذين في قلوبهم مرض والقاسية قلوبهم وان الظالمين لفي شقاق بعيد

[YA]: That He may make the suggestions thrown in by Satan, but a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease and who are hardened of heart: verily the wrong-doers are in a schism far (from the Truth):

[RK]:He thus sets up the devil's scheme as a test for those who harbor doubts in their hearts, and those whose hearts are hardened. The wicked must remain with the opposition.

Qaloo rabbana ghalabatAAalayna shiqwatuna wakunna qawman dalleena

قالوا ربنا غلبت علينا شقوتنا وكنا قوما ضالين

[YA]: They will say: "our Lord! Our misfortune overwhelmed us, and we became a people astray!

[RK]:They will say, "Our Lord, our wickedness overwhelmed us, and we were people gone astray.

Wayawma tashaqqaqu alssamao bialghamamiwanuzzila almala-ikatu tanzeelan

ويوم تشقق السماء بالغمام ونزل الملائكة تنزيلا

[YA]: The Day the heaven shall be rent asunder with clouds, and angels shall be sent down, descending (in ranks),-

[RK]:The heaven will break apart, into masses of clouds, and the angels will descend in multitudes.

Qala innee oreedu an onkihakaihda ibnatayya hatayni AAala anta/juranee thamaniya hijajin fa-in atmamta AAashranfamin AAindika wama oreedu an ashuqqa AAalayka satajiduneein shaa Allahu mina alssaliheena

قال اني اريد ان انكحك احدي ابنتي هاتين علي ان تاجرني ثماني حجج فان اتممت عشرا فمن عندك ومااريد ان اشق عليك ستجدني ان شاء الله من الصالحين

[YA]: He said: "I intend to wed one of these my daughters to thee, on condition that thou serve me for eight years; but if thou complete ten years, it will be (grace) from thee. But I intend not to place thee under a difficulty: thou wilt find me, indeed, if Allah wills, one of the righteous."

[RK]:He said, "I wish to offer one of my two daughters for you to marry, in return for working for me for eight pilgrimages; if you make them ten, it will be voluntary on your part. I do not wish to make this matter too difficult for you. You will find me, GOD willing, righteous."

Bali allatheena kafaroo fee AAizzatinwashiqaqin

بل الذين كفروا في عزة وشقاق

[YA]: But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.

[RK]:Those who disbelieve have plunged into arrogance and defiance.

Qul araaytum in kana min AAindi Allahithumma kafartum bihi man adallu mimman huwa fee shiqaqinbaAAeedin

قل ارايتم ان كان من عند الله ثم كفرتم به من اضل ممن هو في شقاق بعيد

[YA]: Say: "See ye if the (Revelation) is (really) from Allah, and yet do ye reject it? Who is more astray than one who is in a schism far (from any purpose)?"

[RK]:Proclaim: "What if this is truly from GOD, then you decide to reject it? Who are farther astray than those who decide to oppose this?"

Inna allatheena kafaroo wasaddooAAan sabeeli Allahi washaqqoo alrrasoola minbaAAdi ma tabayyana lahumu alhuda lan yadurooAllaha shay-an wasayuhbitu aAAmalahum

ان الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله وشاقوا الرسول من بعد ماتبين لهم الهدي لن يضروا الله شيئا وسيحبط اعمالهم

[YA]: Those who reject Allah, hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, and resist the Messenger, after Guidance has been clearly shown to them, will not injure Allah in the least, but He will make their deeds of no effect.

[RK]:Those who disbelieve and repel from the path of GOD, and oppose the messenger after the guidance has been manifested for them, will never hurt GOD in the least. Instead, He nullifies their works.

Yawma tashaqqaqu al-ardu AAanhum siraAAanthalika hashrun AAalayna yaseerun

يوم تشقق الارض عنهم سراعا ذلك حشر علينا يسير

[YA]: The Day when the Earth will be rent asunder, from (men) hurrying out: that will be a gathering together,- quite easy for Us.

[RK]:The day will come when the earth cracks in a hurry, giving rise to them. Such summoning is easy for us to do.

اقتربت الساعة وانشق القمر

[YA]: The Hour (of Judgment) is nigh, and the moon is cleft asunder.

[RK]:The Hour has come closer, and the moon has split.

Fa-itha inshaqqati alssamaofakanat wardatan kaalddihani

فاذا انشقت السماء فكانت وردة كالدهان

[YA]: When the sky is rent asunder, and it becomes red like ointment:

[RK]:When the sky disintegrates, and turns rose colored like paint.

ذلك بانهم شاقوا الله ورسوله ومن يشاق الله فان الله شديد العقاب

[YA]: That is because they resisted Allah and His Messenger: and if any one resists Allah, verily Allah is severe in Punishment.

[RK]:This is because they opposed GOD and His messenger. For those who oppose GOD and His messenger, GOD is most strict in enforcing retribution.

[RK]:The time will come when the sky is ruptured.

ويتجنبها الاشقي

[YA]: But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,

[RK]:The wicked will avoid it.

اذ انبعث اشقاها

[YA]: Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety).

[RK]:They followed the worst among them.

La yaslaha illaal-ashqa

لايصلاها الا الاشقي

[YA]: None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

[RK]:None burns therein except the wicked.
