Wayaqoolu allatheena amanoolawla nuzzilat sooratun fa-itha onzilat sooratun muhkamatunwathukira feeha alqitalu raayta allatheenafee quloobihim maradun yanthuroona ilayka natharaalmaghshiyyi AAalayhi mina almawti faawla lahum

ويقول الذين امنوا لولا نزلت سورة فاذا انزلت سورة محكمة وذكر فيها القتال رايت الذين في قلوبهم مرض ينظرون اليك نظر المغشي عليه من الموت فاولي لهم

[YA]: Those who believe say, "Why is not a sura sent down (for us)?" But when a sura of basic or categorical meaning is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, thou wilt see those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with a look of one in swoon at the approach of death. But more fitting for them-

[RK]:Those who believed said: "When will a new sura be revealed?" But when a straightforward sura was revealed, wherein fighting was mentioned, you would see those who harbored doubts in their hearts looking at you, as if death had already come to them. They were thus exposed.

Wa-in yaraw kisfan mina alssama-isaqitan yaqooloo sahabun markoomun

وان يروا كسفا من السماء ساقطا يقولوا سحاب مركوم

[YA]: Were they to see a piece of the sky falling (on them), they would (only) say: "Clouds gathered in heaps!"

[RK]:When they see masses falling from the sky, they will say, "Piled clouds!"

لقد راي من ايات ربه الكبري

[YA]: For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!

[RK]:He saw great signs of his Lord.

افرايتم اللات والعزي

[YA]: Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza,

[RK]:Compare this with the female idols Allaat and Al-`Uzzah.

افرءيت الذي تولي

[YA]: Seest thou one who turns back,

[RK]:Have you noted the one who turned away?

اعنده علم الغيب فهو يري

[YA]: What! Has he knowledge of the Unseen so that he can see?

[RK]:Did he possess knowledge of the future? Could he see it?

وان سعيه سوف يري

[YA]: That (the fruit of) his striving will soon come in sight:

[RK]:And everyone's works will be shown.

وان يروا اية يعرضوا ويقولوا سحر مستمر

[YA]: But if they see a Sign, they turn away, and say, "This is (but) transient magic."

[RK]:Then they saw a miracle; but they turned away and said, "Old magic."

[YA]: Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,-

[RK]:Have you noted the semen that you produce?

[YA]: See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?

[RK]:Have you noted the crops you reap?

[YA]: See ye the water which ye drink?

[RK]:Have you noted the water you drink?

[YA]: See ye the Fire which ye kindle?

[RK]:Have you noted the fire you ignite?

Yawma tara almu/mineena waalmu/minatiyasAAa nooruhum bayna aydeehim wabi-aymanihim bushrakumualyawma jannatun tajree min tahtiha al-anharukhalideena feeha thalika huwa alfawzu alAAatheemu

يوم تري المؤمنين والمؤمنات يسعي نورهم بين ايديهم وبايمانهم بشراكم اليوم جنات تجري من تحتها الانهار خالدين فيها ذلك هو الفوز العظيم

[YA]: One Day shalt thou see the believing men and the believing women- how their Light runs forward before them and by their right hands: (their greeting will be): "Good News for you this Day! Gardens beneath which flow rivers! to dwell therein for aye! This is indeed the highest Achievement!"

[RK]:The day will come when you see the believing men and women with their lights radiating ahead of them and to their right. Good news is yours that, on that day, you will have gardens with flowing streams. You will abide therein forever. This is the great triumph.

Alam tara anna Allaha yaAAlamu mafee alssamawati wama fee al-ardima yakoonu min najwa thalathatin illahuwa rabiAAuhum wala khamsatin illa huwa sadisuhumwala adna min thalika wala aktharailla huwa maAAahum ayna ma kanoo thummayunabbi-ohum bima AAamiloo yawma alqiyamati innaAllaha bikulli shay-in AAaleemun

الم تر ان الله يعلم مافي السماوات ومافي الارض مايكون من نجوي ثلاثة الا هو رابعهم ولاخمسة الا هو سادسهم ولاادني من ذلك ولااكثر الا هو معهم اين ماكانوا ثم ينبئهم بما عملوا يوم القيامة ان الله بكل شئ عليم

[YA]: Seest thou not that Allah doth know (all) that is in the heavens and on earth? There is not a secret consultation between three, but He makes the fourth among them, - Nor between five but He makes the sixth,- nor between fewer nor more, but He is in their midst, wheresoever they be: In the end will He tell them the truth of their conduct, on the Day of Judgment. For Allah has full knowledge of all things.

[RK]:Do you not realize that GOD knows everything in the heavens and everything on earth? No three people can conspire secretly without Him being their fourth, nor five without Him being the sixth, nor less than that, nor more, without Him being there with them wherever they may be. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of everything they had done. GOD is fully aware of all things.

Alam tara ila allatheena nuhooAAani alnnajwa thumma yaAAoodoona lima nuhooAAanhu wayatanajawna bial-ithmi waalAAudwaniwamaAAsiyati alrrasooli wa-itha jaookahayyawka bima lam yuhayyika bihi Allahuwayaqooloona fee anfusihim lawla yuAAaththibunaAllahu bima naqoolu hasbuhum jahannamu yaslawnahafabi/sa almaseeru

الم تر الي الذين نهوا عن النجوي ثم يعودون لما نهوا عنه ويتناجون بالاثم والعدوان ومعصية الرسول واذا جاؤوك حيوك بمالم يحيك به الله ويقولون في انفسهم لولا يعذبنا الله بما نقول حسبهم جهنم يصلونها فبئس المصير

[YA]: Turnest thou not thy sight towards those who were forbidden secret counsels yet revert to that which they were forbidden (to do)? And they hold secret counsels among themselves for iniquity and hostility, and disobedience to the Messenger. And when they come to thee, they salute thee, not as Allah salutes thee, (but in crooked ways): And they say to themselves, "Why does not Allah punish us for our words?" Enough for them is Hell: In it will they burn, and evil is that destination!

[RK]:Have you noted those who were enjoined from conspiring secretly, then insist on conspiring? They conspire to commit sin, transgression, and disobedience of the messenger. When they come to you, they greet you with a greeting other than that decreed by GOD. They say inside themselves, "GOD will not punish us for our utterances." Their only requital is Gehenna, wherein they burn; what a miserable destiny.

Alam tara ila allatheenatawallaw qawman ghadiba Allahu AAalayhim mahum minkum wala minhum wayahlifoona AAalaalkathibi wahum yaAAlamoona

الم تر الي الذين تولوا قوما غضب الله عليهم ماهم منكم ولامنهم ويحلفون علي الكذب وهم يعلمون

[YA]: Turnest thou not thy attention to those who turn (in friendship) to such as have the Wrath of Allah upon them? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to falsehood knowingly.

[RK]:Have you noted those who befriended people with whom GOD is angry? They neither belong with you, nor with them. They deliberately swear lies!

Alam tara ila allatheena nafaqooyaqooloona li-ikhwanihimu allatheena kafaroo minahli alkitabi la-in okhrijtum lanakhrujanna maAAakum walanuteeAAu feekum ahadan abadan wa-in qootiltum lanansurannakumwaAllahu yashhadu innahum lakathiboona

الم تر الي الذين نافقوا يقولون لاخوانهم الذين كفروا من اهل الكتاب لئن اخرجتم لنخرجن معكم ولانطيع فيكم احدا ابدا وان قوتلتم لننصرنكم والله يشهد انهم لكاذبون

[YA]: Hast thou not observed the Hypocrites say to their misbelieving brethren among the People of the Book? - "If ye are expelled, we too will go out with you, and we will never hearken to any one in your affair; and if ye are attacked (in fight) we will help you". But Allah is witness that they are indeed liars.

[RK]:Have you noted those who are plagued with hypocrisy, and how they said to their companions in disbelief among the people of the scripture, "If you are evicted we will go out with you, and will never obey anyone who opposes you. If anyone fights you, we will fight on your side." GOD bears witness that they are liars.

Law anzalna hatha alqur-anaAAala jabalin laraaytahu khashiAAan mutasaddiAAanmin khashyati Allahi watilka al-amthalu nadribuhalilnnasi laAAallahum yatafakkaroona

لو انزلنا هذا القران علي جبل لرايته خاشعا متصدعا من خشية الله وتلك الامثال نضربها للناس لعلهم يتفكرون

[YA]: Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain, verily, thou wouldst have seen it humble itself and cleave asunder for fear of Allah. Such are the similitudes which We propound to men, that they may reflect.

[RK]:If we revealed this Quran to a mountain, you would see it trembling, crumbling, out of reverence for GOD. We cite these examples for the people, that they may reflect.

Wa-itha raaytahum tuAAjibuka ajsamuhumwa-in yaqooloo tasmaAA liqawlihim kaannahum khushubunmusannadatun yahsaboona kulla sayhatinAAalayhim humu alAAaduwwu faihtharhum qatalahumuAllahu anna yu/fakoona

واذا رايتهم تعجبك اجسامهم وان يقولوا تسمع لقولهم كانهم خشب مسندة يحسبون كل صيحة عليهم هم العدو فاحذرهم قاتلهم الله اني يؤفكون

[YA]: When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)!

[RK]:When you see them, you may be impressed by their looks. And when they speak, you may listen to their eloquence. They are like standing logs. They think that every call is intended against them. These are the real enemies; beware of them. GOD condemns them; they have deviated.

Wa-itha qeela lahum taAAalawyastaghfir lakum rasoolu Allahi lawwaw ruoosahumwaraaytahum yasuddoona wahum mustakbiroona

واذا قيل لهم تعالوا يستغفر لكم رسول الله لووا رؤوسهم ورايتهم يصدون وهم مستكبرون

[YA]: And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will pray for your forgiveness", they turn aside their heads, and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance.

[RK]:When they are told, "Come let the messenger of GOD pray for your forgiveness," they mockingly turn their heads, and you see them repel others and act arrogantly.

Allathee khalaqa sabAAa samawatintibaqan ma tara fee khalqi alrrahmanimin tafawutin fairjiAAi albasara hal taramin futoorin

الذي خلق سبع سموات طباقا ماتري في خلق الرحمن من تفاوت فارجع البصر هل تري من فطور

[YA]: He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: seest thou any flaw?

[RK]:He created seven universes in layers. You do not see any imperfection in the creation by the Most Gracious. Keep looking; do you see any flaw?

Awa lam yaraw ila alttayrifawqahum saffatin wayaqbidna mayumsikuhunna illa alrrahmanu innahubikulli shay-in baseerun

اولم يروا الي الطير فوقهم صافات ويقبضن مايمسكهن الا الرحمن انه بكل شي بصير

[YA]: Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things.

[RK]:Have they not seen the birds above them lined up in columns and spreading their wings? The Most Gracious is the One who holds them in the air. He is Seer of all things.

Qul araaytum in ahlakaniya Allahuwaman maAAiya aw rahimana faman yujeeru alkafireenamin AAathabin aleemin

قل ارايتم ان اهلكني الله ومن معي او رحمنا فمن يجير الكافرين من عذاب اليم

[YA]: Say: "See ye?- If Allah were to destroy me, and those with me, or if He bestows His Mercy on us,- yet who can deliver the Unbelievers from a grievous Penalty?"

[RK]:Say, "Whether GOD decides to annihilate me and those with me, or to shower us with His mercy, who is there to protect the disbelievers from a painful retribution?"

Qul araaytum in asbaha maokumghawran faman ya/teekum bima-in maAAeenin

قل ارايتم ان اصبح ماؤكم غورا فمن ياتيكم بماء معين

[YA]: Say: "See ye?- If your stream be some morning lost (in the underground earth), who then can supply you with clear-flowing water?"

[RK]:Say, "What if your water sinks away, who will provide you with pure water?"

Sakhkharaha AAalayhim sabAAa layalinwathamaniyata ayyamin husooman fataraalqawma feeha sarAAa kaannahum aAAjazunakhlin khawiyatun

سخرها عليهم سبع ليال وثمانية ايام حسوما فتري القوم فيها صرعي كانهم اعجاز نخل خاوية

[YA]: He made it rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate in its (path), as they had been roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down!

[RK]:He unleashed it upon them for seven nights and eight days, violently. You could see the people tossed around like decayed palm trunks.

Fahal tara lahum min baqiyatin

فهل تري لهم من باقية

[YA]: Then seest thou any of them left surviving?

[RK]:Can you find any trace of them?

Innahum yarawnahu baAAeedan

انهم يرونه بعيدا

[YA]: They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):

[RK]:For they see it far away.

Alam taraw kayfa khalaqa AllahusabAAa samawatin tibaqan

الم تروا كيف خلق الله سبع سموات طباقا

[YA]: "'See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another,

[RK]:Do you not realize that GOD created seven universes in layers?

Muttaki-eena feeha AAala al-ara-ikila yarawna feeha shamsan wala zamhareeran

متكئين فيها علي الارائك لايرون فيها شمسا ولازمهريرا

[YA]: Reclining in the (Garden) on raised thrones, they will see there neither the sun's (excessive heat) nor (the moon's) excessive cold.

[RK]:They relax therein on luxurious furnishings. They suffer neither the heat of the sun, nor any cold.

Wayatoofu AAalayhim wildanunmukhalladoona itha raaytahum hasibtahum lu/lu-anmanthooran

ويطوف عليهم ولدان مخلدون اذا رايتهم حسبتهم لؤلؤا منثورا

[YA]: And round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness): If thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered Pearls.

[RK]:Serving them will be immortal servants. When you see them, they will look like scattered pearls.

Wa-itha raayta thamma raaytanaAAeeman wamulkan kabeeran

واذا رايت ثم رايت نعيما وملكا كبيرا

[YA]: And when thou lookest, it is there thou wilt see a Bliss and a Realm Magnificent.

[RK]:Wherever you look, you will see bliss, and a wonderful dominion.

Wa-itha raayta thamma raaytanaAAeeman wamulkan kabeeran

واذا رايت ثم رايت نعيما وملكا كبيرا

[YA]: And when thou lookest, it is there thou wilt see a Bliss and a Realm Magnificent.

[RK]:Wherever you look, you will see bliss, and a wonderful dominion.

Waburrizati aljaheemu liman yara

وبرزت الجحيم لمن يري

[YA]: And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see,-

[RK]:Hell will be brought into existence.

Kaannahum yawma yarawnaha lamyalbathoo illa AAashiyyatan aw duhaha

كانهم يوم يرونها لم يلبثوا الا عشية او ضحاها

[YA]: The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn!

[RK]:The day they see it, they will feel as if they lasted one evening or half a day.

الم تر كيف فعل ربك بعاد

[YA]: Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-

[RK]:Have you noted what your Lord did to `Aad?

[YA]: Seest thou one who forbids-

[RK]:Have you seen the one who enjoins.

[YA]: Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-

[RK]:Is it not better for him to follow the guidance?

ارايت ان كذب وتولي

[YA]: Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?

[RK]:If he disbelieves and turns away.

الم يعلم بان الله يري

[YA]: Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?

[RK]:Does he not realize that GOD sees?

Yawma-ithin yasduru alnnasuashtatan liyuraw aAAmalahum

يومئذ يصدر الناس اشتاتا ليروا اعمالهم

[YA]: On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done).

[RK]:On that day, the people will issue from every direction, to be shown their works.

لترون الجحيم

[YA]: Ye shall certainly see Hell-Fire!

[RK]:You would envision Hell.

[YA]: Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight!

[RK]:Then you would see it with the eye of certainty.

الم تر كيف فعل ربك باصحاب الفيل

[YA]: Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the Companions of the Elephant?

[RK]:Have you noted what your Lord did to the people of the elephant?

ارايت الذي يكذب بالدين

[YA]: Seest thou one who denies the Judgment (to come)?

[RK]:Do you know who really rejects the faith?

Waraayta alnnasa yadkhuloonafee deeni Allahi afwajan

ورايت الناس يدخلون في دين الله افواجا

[YA]: And thou dost see the people enter Allah's Religion in crowds,

[RK]:You will see the people embracing GOD's religion in throngs.
