[YA]: They will do you no harm, barring a trifling annoyance; if they come out to fight you, they will show you their backs, and no help shall they get. [RK]:They can never harm you, beyond insulting you. If they fight you, they will turn around and flee. They can never win. | ||||

[YA]: O ye People of the Book! believe in what We have (now) revealed, confirming what was (already) with you, before We change the face and fame of some (of you) beyond all recognition, and turn them hindwards, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers, for the decision of Allah Must be carried out. [RK]:O you who received the scripture, you shall believe in what we reveal herein, confirming what you have, before we banish certain faces to exile, or condemn them as we condemned those who desecrated the Sabbath. [YA]: Do they not consider the Qur'an (with care)? Had it been from other Than Allah, they would surely have found therein Much discrepancy. [RK]:Why do they not study the Quran carefully? If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions. | ||||

[YA]: "O my people! Enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin." [RK]:"O my people, enter the holy land that GOD has decreed for you, and do not rebel, lest you become losers." | ||||

[YA]: Of the wrong-doers the last remnant was cut off. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher of the worlds. [RK]:The wicked are thus annihilated. Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe. | ||||

[YA]: We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe. [RK]:We then saved him and those with him, by mercy from us, and we annihilated those who rejected our revelations and refused to be believers. | ||||

[YA]: Behold! Allah promised you one of the two (enemy) parties, that it should be yours: Ye wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the Truth according to His words and to cut off the roots of the Unbelievers;- [RK]:Recall that GOD promised you victory over a certain group, but you still wanted to face the weaker group. It was GOD's plan to establish the truth with His words, and to defeat the disbelievers. | ||||

[YA]: O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them. [RK]:O you who believe, if you encounter the disbelievers who have mobilized against you, do not turn back and flee. | ||||

[YA]: If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)! [RK]:Anyone who turns back on that day, except to carry out a battle plan, or to join his group, has incurred wrath from GOD, and his abode is Hell; what a miserable destiny! | ||||

[YA]: If thou couldst see, when the angels take the souls of the Unbelievers (at death), (How) they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the penalty of the blazing Fire- [RK]:If you could only see those who disbelieved when the angels put them to death! They will beat them on their faces and their rear ends: "Taste the retribution of Hell. | ||||

[YA]: Assuredly Allah did help you in many battle-fields and on the day of Hunain: Behold! your great numbers elated you, but they availed you naught: the land, for all that it is wide, did constrain you, and ye turned back in retreat. [RK]:GOD has granted you victory in many situations. But on the day of Hunayn, you became too proud of your great number. Consequently, it did not help you at all, and the spacious earth became so straitened around you, that you turned around and fled. | ||||

[YA]: Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. No intercessor (can plead with Him) except after His leave (hath been obtained). This is Allah your Lord; Him therefore serve ye: will ye not receive admonition? [RK]:Your only Lord is GOD; the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then assumed all authority. He controls all matters. There is no intercessor, except in accordance with His will. Such is GOD your Lord. You shall worship Him. Would you not take heed? | ||||

[YA]: Say: "Who is it that sustains you (in life) from the sky and from the earth? or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living? and who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?" They will soon say, "Allah". Say, "will ye not then show piety (to Him)?" [RK]:Say, "Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Who controls all the hearing and the eyesight? Who produces the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? Who is in control of all things?" They would say, "GOD." Say, "Why then do you not observe the commandments?" | ||||

[YA]: So they both raced each other to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back: they both found her lord near the door. She said: "What is the (fitting) punishment for one who formed an evil design against thy wife, but prison or a grievous chastisement?" [RK]:The two of them raced towards the door, and, in the process, she tore his garment from the back. They found her husband at the door. She said, "What should be the punishment for one who wanted to molest your wife, except imprisonment or a painful punishment?" | ||||

[YA]: "But if it be that his shirt is torn from the back, then is she the liar, and he is telling the truth!" [RK]:"And if his garment is torn from the back, then she lied, and he is telling the truth." | ||||

[YA]: So when he saw his shirt,- that it was torn at the back,- (her husband) said: "Behold! It is a snare of you women! truly, mighty is your snare! [RK]:When her husband saw that his garment was torn from the back, he said, "This is a woman's scheme. Indeed, your scheming is formidable. | ||||

[YA]: Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs, explaining the signs in detail, that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord. [RK]:GOD is the One who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, then assumed all authority. He committed the sun and the moon, each running (in its orbit) for a predetermined period. He controls all things, and explains the revelations, that you may attain certainty about meeting your Lord. | ||||

[YA]: "Then travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered." [RK]:"You shall take your family during the night. Stay behind them, and make sure that none of you looks back. Go straight as commanded." | ||||

[YA]: And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning. [RK]:We delivered to him this command: those people are to be annihilated in the morning. | ||||

[YA]: And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth). [RK]:We place shields around their minds, to prevent them from understanding it, and deafness in their ears. And when you preach your Lord, using the Quran alone, they run away in aversion. | ||||

[YA]: "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs".. [RK]:"I swear by GOD, I have a plan to deal with your statues, as soon as you leave." | ||||

[YA]: Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old? [RK]:Why do they not reflect upon this scripture? Do they not realize that they have received something never attained by their ancestors? | ||||

[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" But when he saw it moving (of its own accord)as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: "O Moses!" (it was said), "Fear not: truly, in My presence, those called as messengers have no fear,- [RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, do not be afraid. My messengers shall not fear. | ||||

[YA]: Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat. [RK]:You cannot make the dead, nor the deaf, hear the call, if they turn away. | ||||

[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" but when he saw it moving (of its own accord) as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: O Moses!" (It was said), "Draw near, and fear not: for thou art of those who are secure. [RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, come back; do not be afraid. You are perfectly safe. | ||||

[YA]: So verily thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call, when they show their backs and turn away. [RK]:You cannot make the dead, nor the deaf, hear the call, once they turn away. | ||||

[YA]: He rules (all) affairs from the heavens to the earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day, the space whereof will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning. [YA]: And yet they had already covenanted with Allah not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allah must (surely) be answered for. [RK]:They had pledged to GOD in the past that they would not turn around and flee; making a pledge with GOD involves a great responsibility. | ||||

[RK]:This is a scripture that we sent down to you, that is sacred - perhaps they reflect on its verses. Those who possess intelligence will take heed. | ||||

[YA]: "A Day when ye shall turn your backs and flee: No defender shall ye have from Allah: Any whom Allah leaves to stray, there is none to guide... [RK]:"That is the day when you may wish to turn around and flee. But nothing will protect you then from GOD. Whomever GOD sends astray, nothing can guide him." | ||||

[YA]: Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them? [RK]:Why do they not study the Quran carefully? Do they have locks on their minds? | ||||

[YA]: Those who turn back as apostates after Guidance was clearly shown to them,- the Evil One has instigated them and busied them up with false hopes. [RK]:Surely, those who slide back, after the guidance has been manifested to them, the devil has enticed them and led them on. | ||||

[YA]: But how (will it be) when the angels take their souls at death, and smite their faces and their backs? [RK]:How will it be for them when the angels put them to death? They will beat them on their faces and their rear ends. | ||||

[YA]: If the Unbelievers should fight you, they would certainly turn their backs; then would they find neither protector nor helper. [RK]:If the disbelievers ever fought you, they would turn around and flee. They have no Lord and Master; they have no helper. | ||||

[YA]: And during part of the night, (also,) celebrate His praises, and (so likewise) after the postures of adoration. [RK]:During the night you shall meditate on His name, and after prostrating. | ||||
