Lan yadurrookum illa athanwa-in yuqatilookum yuwallookumu al-adbara thumma layunsaroonaلن يضروكم الا اذي وان يقاتلوكم يولوكم الادبار ثم لاينصرون
[YA]: They will do you no harm, barring a trifling annoyance; if they come out to fight you, they will show you their backs, and no help shall they get.

[RK]:They can never harm you, beyond insulting you. If they fight you, they will turn around and flee. They can never win.

Ya ayyuha allatheenaootoo alkitaba aminoo bima nazzalnamusaddiqan lima maAAakum min qabli an natmisawujoohan fanaruddaha AAala adbarihaaw nalAAanahum kama laAAanna as-habaalssabti wakana amru Allahi mafAAoolanياايها الذين اوتوا الكتاب امنوا بما نزلنا مصدقا لما معكم من قبل ان نطمس وجوها فنردها علي ادبارها او نلعنهم كما لعنا اصحاب السبت وكان امر الله مفعولا
[YA]: O ye People of the Book! believe in what We have (now) revealed, confirming what was (already) with you, before We change the face and fame of some (of you) beyond all recognition, and turn them hindwards, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath-breakers, for the decision of Allah Must be carried out.

[RK]:O you who received the scripture, you shall believe in what we reveal herein, confirming what you have, before we banish certain faces to exile, or condemn them as we condemned those who desecrated the Sabbath. GOD's command is done.

[YA]: Do they not consider the Qur'an (with care)? Had it been from other Than Allah, they would surely have found therein Much discrepancy.

[RK]:Why do they not study the Quran carefully? If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions.

Ya qawmi odkhuloo al-ardaalmuqaddasata allatee kataba Allahu lakum walatartaddoo AAala adbarikum fatanqaliboo khasireenaياقوم ادخلوا الارض المقدسة التي كتب الله لكم ولاترتدوا علي ادباركم فتنقلبوا خاسرين
[YA]: "O my people! Enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin."

[RK]:"O my people, enter the holy land that GOD has decreed for you, and do not rebel, lest you become losers."

[YA]: Of the wrong-doers the last remnant was cut off. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher of the worlds.

[RK]:The wicked are thus annihilated. Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe.

Faanjaynahu waallatheenamaAAahu birahmatin minna waqataAAna dabiraallatheena kaththaboo bi-ayatinawama kanoo mu/mineenaفانجيناه والذين معه برحمة منا وقطعنا دابر الذين كذبوا باياتنا وماكانوا مؤمنين
[YA]: We saved him and those who adhered to him. By Our mercy, and We cut off the roots of those who rejected Our signs and did not believe.

[RK]:We then saved him and those with him, by mercy from us, and we annihilated those who rejected our revelations and refused to be believers.

Wa-ith yaAAidukumu Allahu ihdaaltta-ifatayni annaha lakum watawaddoonaanna ghayra thati alshshawkati takoonu lakumwayureedu Allahu an yuhiqqa alhaqqa bikalimatihiwayaqtaAAa dabira alkafireenaواذ يعدكم الله احدي الطائفتين انها لكم وتودون ان غير ذات الشوكة تكون لكم ويريد الله ان يحق الحق بكلماته ويقطع دابر الكافرين
[YA]: Behold! Allah promised you one of the two (enemy) parties, that it should be yours: Ye wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the Truth according to His words and to cut off the roots of the Unbelievers;-

[RK]:Recall that GOD promised you victory over a certain group, but you still wanted to face the weaker group. It was GOD's plan to establish the truth with His words, and to defeat the disbelievers.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooitha laqeetumu allatheena kafaroo zahfan falatuwalloohumu al-adbaraياايها الذين امنوا اذا لقيتم الذين كفروا زحفا فلا تولوهم الادبار
[YA]: O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.

[RK]:O you who believe, if you encounter the disbelievers who have mobilized against you, do not turn back and flee.

Waman yuwallihim yawma-ithin duburahuilla mutaharrifan liqitalin aw mutahayyizanila fi-atin faqad baa bighadabin mina Allahiwama/wahu jahannamu wabi/sa almaseeruومن يولهم يومئذ دبره الا متحرفا لقتال او متحيزا الي فئة فقد باء بغضب من الله وماواه جهنم وبئس المصير
[YA]: If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!

[RK]:Anyone who turns back on that day, except to carry out a battle plan, or to join his group, has incurred wrath from GOD, and his abode is Hell; what a miserable destiny!

Walaw tara ith yatawaffaallatheena kafaroo almala-ikatu yadriboonawujoohahum waadbarahum wathooqoo AAathaba alhareeqiولو تري اذ يتوفي الذين كفروا الملائكة يضربون وجوههم وادبارهم وذوقوا عذاب الحريق
[YA]: If thou couldst see, when the angels take the souls of the Unbelievers (at death), (How) they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): "Taste the penalty of the blazing Fire-

[RK]:If you could only see those who disbelieved when the angels put them to death! They will beat them on their faces and their rear ends: "Taste the retribution of Hell.

Laqad nasarakumu Allahu feemawatina katheeratin wayawma hunaynin ithaAAjabatkum kathratukum falam tughni AAankum shay-an wadaqatAAalaykumu al-ardu bima rahubat thummawallaytum mudbireenaلقد نصركم الله في مواطن كثيرة ويوم حنين اذا اعجبتكم كثرتكم فلم تغن عنكم شيئا وضاقت عليكم الارض بما رحبت ثم وليتم مدبرين
[YA]: Assuredly Allah did help you in many battle-fields and on the day of Hunain: Behold! your great numbers elated you, but they availed you naught: the land, for all that it is wide, did constrain you, and ye turned back in retreat.

[RK]:GOD has granted you victory in many situations. But on the day of Hunayn, you became too proud of your great number. Consequently, it did not help you at all, and the spacious earth became so straitened around you, that you turned around and fled.

Inna rabbakumu Allahu allatheekhalaqa alssamawati waal-ardafee sittati ayyamin thumma istawa AAalaalAAarshi yudabbiru al-amra ma min shafeeAAin illamin baAAdi ithnihi thalikumu Allahu rabbukumfaoAAbudoohu afala tathakkaroonaان ربكم الله الذي خلق السماوات والارض في ستة ايام ثم استوي علي العرش يدبر الامر مامن شفيع الا من بعد اذنه ذلكم الله ربكم فاعبدوه افلا تذكرون
[YA]: Verily your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority), regulating and governing all things. No intercessor (can plead with Him) except after His leave (hath been obtained). This is Allah your Lord; Him therefore serve ye: will ye not receive admonition?

[RK]:Your only Lord is GOD; the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then assumed all authority. He controls all matters. There is no intercessor, except in accordance with His will. Such is GOD your Lord. You shall worship Him. Would you not take heed?

Qul man yarzuqukum mina alssama-iwaal-ardi amman yamliku alssamAAa waal-absarawaman yukhriju alhayya mina almayyiti wayukhriju almayyitamina alhayyi waman yudabbiru al-amra fasayaqooloona Allahufaqul afala tattaqoonaقل من يرزقكم من السماء والارض امن يملك السمع والابصار ومن يخرج الحي من الميت ويخرج الميت من الحي ومن يدبر الامر فسيقولون الله فقل افلا تتقون
[YA]: Say: "Who is it that sustains you (in life) from the sky and from the earth? or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living? and who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?" They will soon say, "Allah". Say, "will ye not then show piety (to Him)?"

[RK]:Say, "Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Who controls all the hearing and the eyesight? Who produces the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? Who is in control of all things?" They would say, "GOD." Say, "Why then do you not observe the commandments?"

Waistabaqa albabawaqaddat qameesahu min duburin waalfaya sayyidahalada albabi qalat ma jazao manarada bi-ahlika soo-an illa an yusjana aw AAathabunaleemunواستبقا الباب وقدت قميصه من دبر والفيا سيدها لدي الباب قالت ماجزاء من اراد باهلك سوءا الا ان يسجن او عذاب اليم
[YA]: So they both raced each other to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back: they both found her lord near the door. She said: "What is the (fitting) punishment for one who formed an evil design against thy wife, but prison or a grievous chastisement?"

[RK]:The two of them raced towards the door, and, in the process, she tore his garment from the back. They found her husband at the door. She said, "What should be the punishment for one who wanted to molest your wife, except imprisonment or a painful punishment?"

Wa-in kana qameesuhu qudda minduburin fakathabat wahuwa mina alssadiqeenaوان كان قميصه قد من دبر فكذبت وهو من الصادقين
[YA]: "But if it be that his shirt is torn from the back, then is she the liar, and he is telling the truth!"

[RK]:"And if his garment is torn from the back, then she lied, and he is telling the truth."

Falamma raa qameesahuqudda min duburin qala innahu min kaydikunna innakaydakunna AAatheemunفلما راي قميصه قد من دبر قال انه من كيدكن ان كيدكن عظيم
[YA]: So when he saw his shirt,- that it was torn at the back,- (her husband) said: "Behold! It is a snare of you women! truly, mighty is your snare!

[RK]:When her husband saw that his garment was torn from the back, he said, "This is a woman's scheme. Indeed, your scheming is formidable.

Allahu allathee rafaAAa alssamawatibighayri AAamadin tarawnaha thumma istawa AAalaalAAarshi wasakhkhara alshshamsa waalqamara kullunyajree li-ajalin musamman yudabbiru al-amra yufassilu al-ayatilaAAallakum biliqa-i rabbikum tooqinoonaالله الذي رفع السماوات بغير عمد ترونها ثم استوي علي العرش وسخرالشمس والقمر كل يجري لاجل مسمي يدبر الامر يفصل الايات لعلكم بلقاء ربكم توقنون
[YA]: Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs, explaining the signs in detail, that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.

[RK]:GOD is the One who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, then assumed all authority. He committed the sun and the moon, each running (in its orbit) for a predetermined period. He controls all things, and explains the revelations, that you may attain certainty about meeting your Lord.

Faasri bi-ahlika biqitAAin minaallayli waittabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafitminkum ahadun waimdoo haythutu/maroonaفاسر باهلك بقطع من الليل واتبع ادبارهم ولايلتفت منكم احد وامضوا حيث تؤمرون
[YA]: "Then travel by night with thy household, when a portion of the night (yet remains), and do thou bring up the rear: let no one amongst you look back, but pass on whither ye are ordered."

[RK]:"You shall take your family during the night. Stay behind them, and make sure that none of you looks back. Go straight as commanded."

Waqadayna ilayhi thalikaal-amra anna dabira haola-i maqtooAAunmusbiheenaوقضينا اليه ذلك الامر ان دابر هؤلاء مقطوع مصبحين
[YA]: And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning.

[RK]:We delivered to him this command: those people are to be annihilated in the morning.

WajaAAalna AAala quloobihimakinnatan an yafqahoohu wafee athanihim waqran wa-ithathakarta rabbaka fee alqur-ani wahdahuwallaw AAala adbarihim nufooranوجعلنا علي قلوبهم اكنة ان يفقهوه وفي اذانهم وقرا واذا ذكرت ربك في القران وحده ولوا علي ادبارهم نفورا
[YA]: And We put coverings over their hearts (and minds) lest they should understand the Qur'an, and deafness into their ears: when thou dost commemorate thy Lord and Him alone in the Qur'an, they turn on their backs, fleeing (from the Truth).

[RK]:We place shields around their minds, to prevent them from understanding it, and deafness in their ears. And when you preach your Lord, using the Quran alone, they run away in aversion.

[YA]: "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs"..

[RK]:"I swear by GOD, I have a plan to deal with your statues, as soon as you leave."

Afalam yaddabbaroo alqawla am jaahumma lam ya/ti abaahumu al-awwaleenaافلم يدبروا القول ام جاءهم مالم يات اباءهم الاولين
[YA]: Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?

[RK]:Why do they not reflect upon this scripture? Do they not realize that they have received something never attained by their ancestors?

Waalqi AAasaka falamma raahatahtazzu kaannaha jannun walla mudbiranwalam yuAAaqqib ya moosa la takhaf innee layakhafu ladayya almursaloonaوالق عصاك فلما راها تهتز كانها جان ولي مدبرا ولم يعقب ياموسي لاتخف اني لايخاف لدي المرسلون
[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" But when he saw it moving (of its own accord)as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: "O Moses!" (it was said), "Fear not: truly, in My presence, those called as messengers have no fear,-

[RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, do not be afraid. My messengers shall not fear.

Innaka la tusmiAAu almawta walatusmiAAu alssumma aldduAAaa ithawallaw mudbireenaانك لاتسمع الموتي ولاتسمع الصم الدعاء اذا ولوا مدبرين
[YA]: Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat.

[RK]:You cannot make the dead, nor the deaf, hear the call, if they turn away.

Waan alqi AAasaka falamma raahatahtazzu kaannaha jannun walla mudbiranwalam yuAAaqqib ya moosa aqbil wala takhafinnaka mina al-amineenaوان الق عصاك فلما راها تهتز كانها جان ولي مدبرا ولم يعقب ياموسي اقبل ولاتخف انك من الامنين
[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" but when he saw it moving (of its own accord) as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: O Moses!" (It was said), "Draw near, and fear not: for thou art of those who are secure.

[RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, come back; do not be afraid. You are perfectly safe.

Fa-innaka la tusmiAAu almawtawala tusmiAAu alssumma aldduAAaaitha wallaw mudbireenaفانك لاتسمع الموتي ولاتسمع الصم الدعاء اذا ولوا مدبرين
[YA]: So verily thou canst not make the dead to hear, nor canst thou make the deaf to hear the call, when they show their backs and turn away.

[RK]:You cannot make the dead, nor the deaf, hear the call, once they turn away.

Yudabbiru al-amra mina alssama-iila al-ardi thumma yaAAruju ilayhi fee yawmin kanamiqdaruhu alfa sanatin mimma taAAuddoonaيدبر الامر من السماء الي الارض ثم يعرج اليه في يوم كان مقداره الف سنة مما تعدون
[YA]: He rules (all) affairs from the heavens to the earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day, the space whereof will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning.

[RK]:All matters are controlled by Him from the heaven to the earth. To Him, the day is equivalent to one thousand of your years.

Walaqad kanoo AAahadoo Allahamin qablu la yuwalloona al-adbara wakanaAAahdu Allahi mas-oolanولقد كانوا عاهدوا الله من قبل لايولون الادبار وكان عهد الله مسؤولا
[YA]: And yet they had already covenanted with Allah not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allah must (surely) be answered for.

[RK]:They had pledged to GOD in the past that they would not turn around and flee; making a pledge with GOD involves a great responsibility.

[YA]: So they turned away from him, and departed.

[RK]:They turned away from him.

Kitabun anzalnahu ilayka mubarakunliyaddabbaroo ayatihi waliyatathakkara olooal-albabiكتاب انزلناه اليك مبارك ليدبروا اياته وليتذكر اولوا الالباب
[YA]: (Here is) a Book which We have sent down unto thee, full of blessings, that they may mediate on its Signs, and that men of understanding may receive admonition.

[RK]:This is a scripture that we sent down to you, that is sacred - perhaps they reflect on its verses. Those who possess intelligence will take heed.

Yawma tuwalloona mudbireena ma lakummina Allahi min AAasimin waman yudlili Allahufama lahu min hadinيوم تولون مدبرين مالكم من الله من عاصم ومن يضلل الله فماله من هاد
[YA]: "A Day when ye shall turn your backs and flee: No defender shall ye have from Allah: Any whom Allah leaves to stray, there is none to guide...

[RK]:"That is the day when you may wish to turn around and flee. But nothing will protect you then from GOD. Whomever GOD sends astray, nothing can guide him."

[YA]: Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked up by them?

[RK]:Why do they not study the Quran carefully? Do they have locks on their minds?

Inna allatheena irtaddoo AAalaadbarihim min baAAdi ma tabayyana lahumu alhudaalshshaytanu sawwala lahum waamla lahumان الذين ارتدوا علي ادبارهم من بعد ماتبين لهم الهدي الشيطان سول لهم واملي لهم
[YA]: Those who turn back as apostates after Guidance was clearly shown to them,- the Evil One has instigated them and busied them up with false hopes.

[RK]:Surely, those who slide back, after the guidance has been manifested to them, the devil has enticed them and led them on.

Fakayfa itha tawaffat-humu almala-ikatuyadriboona wujoohahum waadbarahumفكيف اذا توفتهم الملائكة يضربون وجوههم وادبارهم
[YA]: But how (will it be) when the angels take their souls at death, and smite their faces and their backs?

[RK]:How will it be for them when the angels put them to death? They will beat them on their faces and their rear ends.

Walaw qatalakumu allatheenakafaroo lawallawoo al-adbara thumma la yajidoonawaliyyan wala naseeranولو قاتلكم الذين كفروا لولوا الادبار ثم لايجدون وليا ولانصيرا
[YA]: If the Unbelievers should fight you, they would certainly turn their backs; then would they find neither protector nor helper.

[RK]:If the disbelievers ever fought you, they would turn around and flee. They have no Lord and Master; they have no helper.

[YA]: And during part of the night, (also,) celebrate His praises, and (so likewise) after the postures of adoration.

[RK]:During the night you shall meditate on His name, and after prostrating.

[YA]: And for part of the night also praise thou Him,- and at the retreat of the stars!

[RK]:Also during the night glorify Him, and at dawn as the stars fade away.

[YA]: Soon will their multitude be put to flight, and they will show their backs.

[RK]:All of them will be defeated; they will turn around and flee.

La-in okhrijoo la yakhrujoonamaAAahum wala-in qootiloo la yansuroonahum wala-innasaroohum layuwallunna al-adbara thumma layunsaroonaلئن اخرجوا لايخرجون معهم ولئن قوتلوا لاينصرونهم ولئن نصروهم ليولن الادبار ثم لاينصرون
[YA]: If they are expelled, never will they go out with them; and if they are attacked (in fight), they will never help them; and if they do help them, they will turn their backs; so they will receive no help.

[RK]:In fact, if they were evicted, they would not have gone out with them, and if anyone fought them, they would not have supported them. Even if they supported them, they would have turned around and fled. They could never win.

[YA]: Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right).

[RK]:It calls on those who turned away.

[YA]: Then he turned back and was haughty;

[RK]:Then he turned away arrogantly.

[YA]: Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).

[RK]:Then he turned away in a hurry.
