[YA]: Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!
[RK]:In trying to deceive GOD and those who believe, they only deceive themselves without perceiving.
[YA]: Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.
[RK]:In fact, they are evildoers, but they do not perceive.
[YA]: And say not of those who are slain in the way of Allah: "They are dead." Nay, they are living, though ye perceive (it) not.
[RK]:Do not say of those who are killed in the cause of GOD, "They are dead." They are alive at their Lord, but you do not perceive.
[YA]: Behold! Safa and Marwa are among the Symbols of Allah. So if those who visit the House in the Season or at other times, should compass them round, it is no sin in them. And if any one obeyeth his own impulse to good,- be sure that Allah is He Who recogniseth and knoweth.
[RK]:The knolls of Safa and Marwah are among the rites decreed by GOD. Anyone who observes Hajj or `Umrah commits no error by traversing the distance between them. If one volunteers more righteous works, then GOD is Appreciative, Omniscient.
[YA]: It is no crime in you if ye seek of the bounty of your Lord (during pilgrimage). Then when ye pour down from (Mount) Arafat, celebrate the praises of Allah at the Sacred Monument, and celebrate His praises as He has directed you, even though, before this, ye went astray.
[RK]:You commit no error by seeking provisions from your Lord (through commerce). When you file from `Arafaat, you shall commemorate GOD at the Sacred Location (of Muzdalifah). You shall commemorate Him for guiding you; before this, you had gone astray.
[YA]: It is the wish of a section of the People of the Book to lead you astray. But they shall lead astray (Not you), but themselves, and they do not perceive!
[RK]:Some followers of the scripture wish to lead you astray, but they only lead themselves astray, without perceiving.
[YA]: O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the sacred house, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment.
[RK]:O you who believe, do not violate the rites instituted by GOD, nor the Sacred Months, nor the animals to be offered, nor the garlands marking them, nor the people who head for the Sacred Shrine (Ka`bah) seeking blessings from their Lord and approval. Once you complete the pilgrimage, you may hunt. Do not be provoked into aggression by your hatred of people who once prevented you from going to the Sacred Masjid. You shall cooperate in matters of righteousness and piety; do not cooperate in matters that are sinful and evil. You shall observe GOD. GOD is strict in enforcing retribution.
[YA]: Others they keep away from it, and themselves they keep away; but they only destroy their own souls, and they perceive it not.
[RK]:They repel others from this (Quran), as they themselves stay away from it, and thus, they only destroy themselves without perceiving.
[YA]: They swear their strongest oaths by Allah, that if a (special) sign came to them, by it they would believe. Say: "Certainly (all) signs are in the power of Allah: but what will make you (Muslims) realise that (even) if (special) signs came, they will not believe."?
[RK]:They swore by GOD, solemnly, that if a miracle came to them, they would surely believe. Say, "Miracles come only from GOD." For all you know, if a miracle did come to them, they would continue to disbelieve.
[YA]: Thus have We placed leaders in every town, its wicked men, to plot (and burrow) therein: but they only plot against their own souls, and they perceive it not.
[RK]:We allow the leading criminals of every community to plot and scheme. But they only plot and scheme against their own souls, without perceiving.
[YA]: Then We changed their suffering into prosperity, until they grew and multiplied, and began to say: "Our fathers (too) were touched by suffering and affluence" ... Behold! We called them to account of a sudden, while they realised not (their peril).
[RK]:Then we substituted peace and prosperity in place of that hardship. But alas, they turned heedless and said, "It was our parents who experienced that hardship before prosperity." Consequently, we punished them suddenly when they least expected.
[YA]: So they did take him away, and they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well: and We put into his heart (this Message): 'Of a surety thou shalt (one day) tell them the truth of this their affair while they know (thee) not'
[RK]:When they went away with him, and unanimously decided to throw him into the abyss of the well, we inspired him: "Some day, you will tell them about all this, while they have no idea."
[YA]: Do they then feel secure from the coming against them of the covering veil of the wrath of Allah,- or of the coming against them of the (final) Hour all of a sudden while they perceive not?
[RK]:Have they guaranteed that an overwhelming retribution from GOD will not strike them, or the Hour will not come to them suddenly, when they least expect it?
[YA]: (They are things) dead, lifeless: nor do they know when they will be raised up.
[RK]:They are dead, not alive, and they have no idea how or when they will be resurrected.
[YA]: Those before them did also plot (against Allah's Way): but Allah took their structures from their foundations, and the roof fell down on them from above; and the Wrath seized them from directions they did not perceive.
[RK]:Others like them have schemed in the past, and consequently, GOD destroyed their building at the foundation, causing the roof to fall on them. The retribution struck them when they least expected.
[YA]: Do then those who devise evil (plots) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up, or that the Wrath will not seize them from directions they little perceive?-
[RK]:Did those who scheme evil schemes guarantee that GOD will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the retribution will not come to them when they least expect it?
[YA]: It is Allah Who made your habitations homes of rest and quiet for you; and made for you, out of the skins of animals, (tents for) dwellings, which ye find so light (and handy) when ye travel and when ye stop (in your travels); and out of their wool, and their soft fibres (between wool and hair), and their hair, rich stuff and articles of convenience (to serve you) for a time.
[RK]:And GOD provided for you stationary homes where you can live. And He provided for you portable homes made of the hides of livestock, so you can use them when you travel, and when you settle down. And from their wools, furs, and hair, you make furnishings and luxuries for awhile.
[YA]: Such (being their state), we raised them up (from sleep), that they might question each other. Said one of them, "How long have ye stayed (here)?" They said, "We have stayed (perhaps) a day, or part of a day." (At length) they (all) said, "Allah (alone) knows best how long ye have stayed here.... Now send ye then one of you with this money of yours to the town: let him find out which is the best food (to be had) and bring some to you, that (ye may) satisfy your hunger therewith: And let him behave with care and courtesy, and let him not inform any one about you.
[RK]:When we resurrected them, they asked each other, "How long have you been here?" "We have been here one day or part of the day," they answered. "Your Lord knows best how long we stayed here, so let us send one of us with this money to the city. Let him fetch the cleanest food, and buy some for us. Let him keep a low profile, and attract no attention.
[YA]: "Nay," they say, "(these are) medleys of dream! - Nay, He forged it! - Nay, He is (but) a poet! Let him then bring us a Sign like the ones that were sent to (Prophets) of old!"
[RK]:They even said, "Hallucinations," "He made it up," and, "He is a poet. Let him show us a miracle like those of the previous messengers."
[YA]: Such (is his state): and whoever holds in honour the symbols of Allah, (in the sacrifice of animals), such (honour) should come truly from piety of heart.
[RK]:Indeed, those who reverence the rites decreed by GOD demonstrate the righteousness of their hearts.
[YA]: The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful.
[RK]:The animal offerings are among the rites decreed by GOD for your own good. You shall mention GOD's name on them while they are standing in line. Once they are offered for sacrifice, you shall eat therefrom and feed the poor and the needy. This is why we subdued them for you, that you may show your appreciation.
[YA]: We would hasten them on in every good? Nay, they do not understand.
[RK]:we must be showering them with blessings? Indeed, they have no idea.
[YA]: "Their account is only with my Lord, if ye could (but) understand.
[RK]:"Their judgment rests only with my Lord, if you could perceive.
[YA]: But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;
[RK]:It will come to them suddenly, when they least expect it.
[YA]: And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them:
[RK]:As for the poets, they are followed only by the strayers.
[YA]: At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: "O ye ants, get into your habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it."
[RK]:When they approached the valley of the ants, one ant said, "O you ants, go into your homes, lest you get crushed by Solomon and his soldiers, without perceiving."
[YA]: They plotted and planned, but We too planned, even while they perceived it not.
[RK]:They plotted and schemed, but we also plotted and schemed, while they did not perceive.
[YA]: Say: None in the heavens or on earth, except Allah, knows what is hidden: nor can they perceive when they shall be raised up (for Judgment).
[RK]:Say, "No one in the heavens and the earth knows the future except GOD. They do not even perceive how or when they will be resurrected."
[YA]: The wife of Pharaoh said: "(Here is) joy of the eye, for me and for thee: slay him not. It may be that he will be use to us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not (what they were doing)!
[RK]:Pharaoh's wife said, "This can be a joyous find for me and you. Do not kill him, for he may be of some benefit for us, or we may adopt him to be our son." They had no idea.
[YA]: And she said to the sister of (Moses), "Follow him" so she (the sister) watched him in the character of a stranger. And they knew not.
[RK]:She said to his sister, "Trace his path." She watched him from afar, while they did not perceive.
[YA]: They ask thee to hasten on the Punishment (for them): had it not been for a term (of respite) appointed, the Punishment would certainly have come to them: and it will certainly reach them,- of a sudden, while they perceive not!
[RK]:They challenge you to bring the retribution! If it were not for a predetermined appointment, the retribution would have come to them immediately. Certainly, it will come to them suddenly, when they least expect it.
[YA]: We have not instructed the (Prophet) in Poetry, nor is it meet for him: this is no less than a Message and a Qur'an making things clear:
[RK]:What we taught him (the messenger) was not poetry, nor is he (a poet). This is but a formidable proof, and a profound Quran.
[YA]: And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
[RK]:They said, "Shall we leave our gods for the sake of a crazy poet?"
[YA]: Those before them (also) rejected (revelation), and so the Punishment came to them from directions they did not perceive.
[RK]:Others before them have disbelieved and, consequently, the retribution afflicted them whence they never expected.
[YA]: "And follow the best of (the courses) revealed to you from your Lord, before the Penalty comes on you - of a sudden while ye perceive not!-
[RK]:And follow the best path that is pointed out for you by your Lord, before the retribution overtakes you suddenly when you least expect it.
[YA]: Do they only wait for the Hour - that it should come on them all of a sudden, while they perceive not?
[RK]:Are they waiting for the Hour (Day of Judgment) to come to them suddenly when they least expect it?
[YA]: O ye who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk, as ye may speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds become vain and ye perceive not.
[RK]:O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the prophet, nor shall you shout at him as you shout at each other, lest your works become nullified while you do not perceive.
[YA]: Or do they say:- "A Poet! we await for him some calamity (hatched) by Time!"
[RK]:They may say, "He is a poet; let us just wait until he is dead."
[YA]: That He is the Lord of Sirius (the Mighty Star);
[RK]:He is the Lord of the galaxies.
[YA]: It is not the word of a poet: little it is ye believe!
[RK]:Not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.
