[YA]: So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?

[RK]:When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, "Do we get paid, if we are the winners?"

[YA]: "Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!"

[RK]:"We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, especially that we are the first believers."

[YA]: Then We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

[RK]:We then inspired Moses: "Strike the sea with your staff," whereupon it parted. Each part was like a great hill.

[YA]: "Forgive my father, for that he is among those astray;

[YA]: "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped-

[YA]: "'By Allah, we were truly in an error manifest,

[YA]: "'Now if we only had a chance of return we shall truly be of those who believe!'"

[YA]: He said: "And what do I know as to what they do?

[RK]:They thus disbelieved and, consequently, we annihilated them. This should be a lesson, but most people are not believers.

[YA]: But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.

[RK]:They disbelieved him and, consequently, they incurred the retribution of the Day of the Canopy. It was the retribution of an awesome day.

[YA]: Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!

[RK]:Then the retribution came to them, just as promised.

[YA]: It will profit them not that they enjoyed (this life)!

[RK]:Their vast resources did not help them in the least.

[YA]: So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.

[RK]:Therefore, do not idolize beside GOD any other god, lest you incur the retribution.

Waalqi AAasaka falamma raahatahtazzu kaannaha jannun walla mudbiranwalam yuAAaqqib ya moosa la takhaf innee layakhafu ladayya almursaloonaوالق عصاك فلما راها تهتز كانها جان ولي مدبرا ولم يعقب ياموسي لاتخف اني لايخاف لدي المرسلون
[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" But when he saw it moving (of its own accord)as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: "O Moses!" (it was said), "Fear not: truly, in My presence, those called as messengers have no fear,-

[RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, do not be afraid. My messengers shall not fear.

Waadkhil yadaka fee jaybika takhruj baydaamin ghayri soo-in fee tisAAi ayatin ilafirAAawna waqawmihi innahum kanoo qawman fasiqeenaوادخل يدك في جيبك تخرج بيضاء من غير سوء في تسع ايات الي فرعون وقومه انهم كانوا قوما فاسقين
[YA]: "Now put thy hand into thy bosom, and it will come forth white without stain (or harm): (these are) among the nine Signs (thou wilt take) to Pharaoh and his people: for they are a people rebellious in transgression."

[RK]:"Put your hand in your pocket; it will come out white, without a blemish. These are among nine miracles to Pharaoh and his people, for they are wicked people."

Wajahadoo biha waistayqanat-haanfusuhum thulman waAAuluwwan faonthurkayfa kana AAaqibatu almufsideenaوجحدوا بها واستيقنتها انفسهم ظلما وعلوا فانظر كيف كان عاقبة المفسدين
[YA]: And they rejected those Signs in iniquity and arrogance, though their souls were convinced thereof: so see what was the end of those who acted corruptly!

[RK]:They rejected them and were utterly convinced of their wrong ways, due to their arrogance. Note the consequences for the evildoers.

Watafaqqada alttayra faqalama liya la ara alhudhuda am kana minaalgha-ibeenaوتفقد الطير فقال مالي لااري الهدهد ام كان من الغائبين
[YA]: And he took a muster of the Birds; and he said: "Why is it I see not the Hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees?

[RK]:He inspected the birds, and noted: "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Why is he missing?

Falamma jaat qeela ahakathaAAarshuki qalat kaannahu huwa waooteena alAAilmamin qabliha wakunna muslimeenaفلما جاءت قيل اهكذا عرشك قالت كانه هو واوتينا العلم من قبلها وكنا مسلمين
[YA]: So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."

[RK]:When she arrived, she was asked, "Does your mansion look like this?" She said, "It seems that this is it." (Solomon said,) "We knew beforehand what she was going to do, and we were already submitters."

[YA]: So when she arrived, she was asked, "Is this thy throne?" She said, "It was just like this; and knowledge was bestowed on us in advance of this, and we have submitted to Allah (in Islam)."

[RK]:When she arrived, she was asked, "Does your mansion look like this?" She said, "It seems that this is it." (Solomon said,) "We knew beforehand what she was going to do, and we were already submitters."

[YA]: And he diverted her from the worship of others besides Allah: for she was (sprung) of a people that had no faith.

[RK]:She had been diverted by worshipping idols instead of GOD; she belonged to disbelieving people.

[YA]: There were in the city nine men of a family, who made mischief in the land, and would not reform.

[RK]:There were nine gangsters in the city who were wicked, and never did anything good.

Faonthur kayfa kanaAAaqibatu makrihim anna dammarnahumwaqawmahum ajmaAAeenaفانظر كيف كان عاقبة مكرهم انا دمرناهم وقومهم اجمعين
[YA]: Then see what was the end of their plot!- this, that We destroyed them and their people, all (of them).

[RK]:Note the consequences of their plotting; we annihilated them and all their people.

Waanjayna allatheena amanoowakanoo yattaqoonaوانجينا الذين امنوا وكانوا يتقون
[YA]: And We saved those who believed and practised righteousness.

[RK]:We save those who believe and lead a righteous life.

Fama kana jawabaqawmihi illa an qaloo akhrijoo ala lootinmin qaryatikum innahum onasun yatatahharoonaفما كان جواب قومه الا ان قالوا اخرجوا ال لوط من قريتكم انهم اناس يتطهرون
[YA]: But his people gave no other answer but this: they said, "Drive out the followers of Lut from your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!"

[RK]:The only response from his people was their saying, "Banish Lot's family from your town; they are people who wish to be pure."

Amman khalaqa alssamawatiwaal-arda waanzala lakum mina alssama-imaan faanbatna bihi hada-iqa thatabahjatin ma kana lakum an tunbitoo shajarahaa-ilahun maAAa Allahi bal hum qawmun yaAAdiloonaامن خلق السماوات والارض وانزل لكم من السماء ماء فانبتنا به حدائق ذات بهجة ماكان لكم ان تنبتوا شجرها ءاله مع الله بل هم قوم يعدلون
[YA]: Or, Who has created the heavens and the earth, and Who sends you down rain from the sky? Yea, with it We cause to grow well-planted orchards full of beauty of delight: it is not in your power to cause the growth of the trees in them. (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, they are a people who swerve from justice.

[RK]:Who is the One who created the heavens and the earth? Who is the One who sends down to you from the sky water, whereby we produce gardens full of beauty - you could not possibly manufacture its trees? Is it another god with GOD? Indeed, they are people who have deviated.

Amman yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuAAeeduhuwaman yarzuqukum mina alssama-i waal-ardia-ilahun maAAa Allahi qul hatoo burhanakumin kuntum sadiqeenaامن يبدؤ الخلق ثم يعيده ومن يرزقكم من السماء والارض ءاله مع الله قل هاتوا برهانكم ان كنتم صادقين
[YA]: Or, Who originates creation, then repeats it, and who gives you sustenance from heaven and earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Say, "Bring forth your argument, if ye are telling the truth!"

[RK]:Who is the One who initiates the creation, then repeats it? Who is the One who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Is it another god with GOD? Say, "Show me your proof, if you are truthful."

Waqala allatheena kafaroo a-ithakunna turaban waabaona a-innalamukhrajoonaوقال الذين كفروا ءاذا كنا ترابا واباؤنا ائنا لمخرجون
[YA]: The Unbelievers say: "What! when we become dust,- we and our fathers,- shall we really be raised (from the dead)?

[RK]:Those who disbelieved said, "After we turn into dust, and also our parents, do we get brought out?

Qul seeroo fee al-ardi faonthurookayfa kana AAaqibatu almujrimeenaقل سيروا في الارض فانظروا كيف كان عاقبة المجرمين
[YA]: Say: "Go ye through the earth and see what has been the end of those guilty (of sin)."

[RK]:Say, "Roam the earth and note the consequences for the guilty."

Wayaqooloona mata hathaalwaAAdu in kuntum sadiqeenaويقولون متي هذا الوعد ان كنتم صادقين
[YA]: They also say: "When will this promise (come to pass)? (Say) if ye are truthful."

[RK]:They say, "When will that promise come to pass, if you are truthful?"

Qul AAasa an yakoona radifa lakumbaAAdu allathee tastaAAjiloonaقل عسي ان يكون ردف لكم بعض الذي تستعجلون
[YA]: Say: "It may be that some of the events which ye wish to hasten on may be (close) in your pursuit!"

[RK]:Say, "You are already suffering some of the retribution you challenge."

Wa-itha waqaAAa alqawlu AAalayhimakhrajna lahum dabbatan mina al-arditukallimuhum anna alnnasa kanoo bi-ayatinala yooqinoonaواذا وقع القول عليهم اخرجنا لهم دابة من الارض تكلمهم ان الناس كانوا باياتنا لايوقنون
[YA]: And when the Word is fulfilled against them (the unjust), we shall produce from the earth a beast to (face) them: He will speak to them, for that mankind did not believe with assurance in Our Signs.

[RK]:At the right time, we will produce for them a creature, made of earthly materials, declaring that the people are not certain about our revelations.

Hatta itha jaooqala akaththabtum bi-ayatee walam tuheetoobiha AAilman ammatha kuntum taAAmaloonaحتي اذا جاؤوا قال اكذبتم باياتي ولم تحيطوا بها علما اماذا كنتم تعملون
[YA]: Until, when they come (before the Judgment-seat), (Allah) will say: "Did ye reject My Signs, though ye comprehended them not in knowledge, or what was it ye did?"

[RK]:When they arrive, He will say, "You have rejected My revelations, before acquiring knowledge about them. Is this not what you did?"

Waman jaa bialssayyi-atifakubbat wujoohuhum fee alnnari hal tujzawna illama kuntum taAAmaloonaومن جاء بالسيئة فكبت وجوههم في النار هل تجزون الا ماكنتم تعملون
[YA]: And if any do evil, their faces will be thrown headlong into the Fire: "Do ye receive a reward other than that which ye have earned by your deeds?"

[RK]:As for those who bring evil works, they will be forced into Hell. Do you not get requited for what you did?

Innama omirtu an aAAbuda rabba hathihialbaldati allathee harramaha walahu kullushay-in waomirtu an akoona mina almuslimeenaانما امرت ان اعبد رب هذه البلدة الذي حرمها وله كل شئ وامرت ان اكون من المسلمين
[YA]: For me, I have been commanded to serve the Lord of this city, Him Who has sanctified it and to Whom (belong) all things: and I am commanded to be of those who bow in Islam to Allah's Will,-

[RK]:I am simply commanded to worship the Lord of this town - He has made it a safe sanctuary - and He possesses all things. I am commanded to be a submitter.

Inna firAAawna AAala fee al-ardiwajaAAala ahlaha shiyaAAan yastadAAifu ta-ifatanminhum yuthabbihu abnaahum wayastahyeenisaahum innahu kana mina almufsideenaان فرعون علا في الارض وجعل اهلها شيعا يستضعف طائفة منهم يذبح ابناءهم ويستحيي نساءهم انه كان من المفسدين
[YA]: Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing a small group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he was indeed a maker of mischief.

[RK]:Pharaoh turned into a tyrant on earth, and discriminated against some people. He persecuted a helpless group of them, slaughtering their sons, while sparing their daughters. He was indeed wicked.

Wanumakkina lahum fee al-ardi wanuriyafirAAawna wahamana wajunoodahuma minhum makanoo yahtharoonaونمكن لهم في الارض ونري فرعون وهامان وجنودهما منهم ماكانوا يحذرون
[YA]: To establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts, at their hands, the very things against which they were taking precautions.

[RK]:And to establish them on earth, and to give Pharaoh, Hamaan, and their troops a taste of their own medicine.

Failtaqatahu alufirAAawna liyakoona lahum AAaduwwan wahazanan innafirAAawna wahamana wajunoodahuma kanookhati-eenaفالتقطه ال فرعون ليكون لهم عدوا وحزنا ان فرعون وهامان وجنودهما كانوا خاطئين
[YA]: Then the people of Pharaoh picked him up (from the river): (It was intended) that (Moses) should be to them an adversary and a cause of sorrow: for Pharaoh and Haman and (all) their hosts were men of sin.

[RK]:Pharaoh's family picked him up, only to have him lead the opposition and to be a source of grief for them. That is because Pharaoh, Hamaan, and their troops were transgressors.

Failtaqatahu alufirAAawna liyakoona lahum AAaduwwan wahazanan innafirAAawna wahamana wajunoodahuma kanookhati-eenaفالتقطه ال فرعون ليكون لهم عدوا وحزنا ان فرعون وهامان وجنودهما كانوا خاطئين
[YA]: Then the people of Pharaoh picked him up (from the river): (It was intended) that (Moses) should be to them an adversary and a cause of sorrow: for Pharaoh and Haman and (all) their hosts were men of sin.

[RK]:Pharaoh's family picked him up, only to have him lead the opposition and to be a source of grief for them. That is because Pharaoh, Hamaan, and their troops were transgressors.

Qala rabbi bima anAAamtaAAalayya falan akoona thaheeran lilmujrimeenaقال رب بما انعمت علي فلن اكون ظهيرا للمجرمين
[YA]: He said: "O my Lord! For that Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace on me, never shall I be a help to those who sin!"

[RK]:He said, "My Lord, in return for Your blessings upon me, I will never be a supporter of the guilty ones."

Waan alqi AAasaka falamma raahatahtazzu kaannaha jannun walla mudbiranwalam yuAAaqqib ya moosa aqbil wala takhafinnaka mina al-amineenaوان الق عصاك فلما راها تهتز كانها جان ولي مدبرا ولم يعقب ياموسي اقبل ولاتخف انك من الامنين
[YA]: "Now do thou throw thy rod!" but when he saw it moving (of its own accord) as if it had been a snake, he turned back in retreat, and retraced not his steps: O Moses!" (It was said), "Draw near, and fear not: for thou art of those who are secure.

[RK]:"Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. "O Moses, come back; do not be afraid. You are perfectly safe.

Osluk yadaka fee jaybika takhruj baydaamin ghayri soo-in waodmum ilayka janahakamina alrrahbi fathanika burhanani minrabbika ila firAAawna wamala-ihi innahum kanooqawman fasiqeenaاسلك يدك في جيبك تخرج بيضاء من غير سوء واضمم اليك جناحك من الرهب فذانك برهانان من ربك الي فرعون وملئه انهم كانوا قوما فاسقين
[YA]: "Move thy hand into thy bosom, and it will come forth white without stain (or harm), and draw thy hand close to thy side (to guard) against fear. Those are the two credentials from thy Lord to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: for truly they are a people rebellious and wicked."

[RK]:"Put your hand into your pocket; it will come out white without a blemish. Fold your wings and settle down from your fear. These are two proofs from your Lord, to be shown to Pharaoh and his elders; they have been wicked people."
